Many people avoid necessary dental care due to a fear of the dentist. Regrettably, ignoring your dental health not only disturbs the function and appearance of your smile – it can have an influence on your whole body health as well. Dental illnesses such as gum disease have been related to an increased risk of heart disease, among other things. To benefit our patients who may have some degree of dental phobia, we offer oral conscious sedation at our Sherman, TX dental office. Taken in the pill form approximately one hour prior to your dental appointment, this sedative significantly eases your anxiety while allowing you to maintain consciousness throughout your dental treatment.
Oral sedation dentistry is a guileless yet effective means of comforting a patient’s nerves.
Two of the biggest advantages of oral sedation dentistry are that it is “easy to manage – just swallow a small pill” and it “works well for all kinds of patients”.
The only disadvantage we can see with oral sedation dentistry is that you need someone drive you to and from our dental office since, after taking a pill you may feel drowsy and relaxed.
Our dental staff will guide you through the entire process once you arrive at our dental office. You may not observe any pain with your dental procedures.
When your treatment is finished, your friend or relative will drive you home. When you are fully awake, you will feel comfortable, relaxed and free from stress. You will probably remember very little about your dental appointment. You should not operate a motor vehicle for 24 hours after receiving oral sedation.
No needles – just a simple pill.
The oral sedation process entails the following:
Step 1 – Night Before: You will be prescribed two pills. The first pill, typically an anti-anxiety drug belonging to the benzodiazepine or “benzo” family, is taken the night before your treatment. This helps ensure you enjoy a good night’s sleep, so that you are well-rested for your dental treatment the following day.
Step 2 – Dental Treatment Day: On the day of your dental treatment, you will be suggested an additional anti-anxiety pill, which is to be taken approx. one hour prior to your dentist appointment. The pill will take effect fast, so it’s vital that you have a friend or family member accompanying you to our dental office.
Step 3 – The Dental Procedure: During your dental treatment, you will remain awake and be able to reply to instructions. However, you will be in a state of deep relaxation, one like to a light sleep. One of the reasons we apply oral sedation at our dental office is because of the ease of use it offers.
Step 4 – After the Dental Treatment: Once your dental treatment is complete, the effects of the oral sedative will continue affecting of several hours. You will be incapable to drive and will be dependent on your friend or a family member until the effects have worn out.
